GOBLIN BAND THE PRICKLE HOLLY BUSH
Queer folk six-piece Goblin Band release their debut single ‘The Prickle Holly Bush’ via Broadside Hacks recordings. Recent arrivals on the thriving UK trad folk scene, Goblin Band are to be spotted lurking around Hobgoblin Music, a shop in central London in which your hard earned gold and silver can be exchanged for left-field and otherworldly instruments. ‘The Prickle Holly Bush’ is a 19th century ballad and tells a grim story of one condemned for execution, Goblin Band offering here a dramatic and rich interpretation of the tune. Percussion thuds and rattles, bellows groan and sigh, all while vocals harmonise expertly throughout. The band also offer a reinterpretation of the song's themes, in their own words Goblin Band are reflecting on “these timeless themes of estrangement, chosen family, and hope in the face of society’s structures of brutality, through the lens of queer experience in 21st Century England.” -Adam Brown
